So you have watched all of Disney+ already?
It was one of the success stories of lockdown, gaining millions of sign-ups to the Disney free trial, as we stayed locked in and locked out of life. But there’s a world outside Disney+ that deserves your attention, especially when it comes to action family movies, original series and fun flicks for all the family.
So, if you’re ready for some inspiration, be sure to read on as we’ve picked out eight of the best family-friendly movies.
Better still… you won’t find these on Disney+.
Minions (U)
We are team King Bob!
Say Bello! to these mischievous banana-coloured critters in this prequal to Despicable Me. Full of fun, laughter and absolute silliness, you can’t help but laugh-out-loud at the sheer inappropriateness of it all. Follow Kevin, Stuart and Bob on a global journey for a new leader, as they stumble across mega-villain Scarlett Overkill, who recruits them as her henchmen in a bid to take over the world.
Featuring Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm and Michael Keaton, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most-watched family movies on Netflix.
Paddington (PG)
It’s time for a touch of nostalgia, as you take a stroll down memory lane with Peru’s most famous bear. Paddington finds himself lost in London, before being taken in by the Brown family. Bringing smiles and adventures to a whole new generation, this is the perfect family-friendly movie for a Saturday night in. With excellent casting and acting from Hugh Bonnevillle and Julie Waters.
Catch it on Binge, Apple TV or Google Play.
The Willoughby’s (PG)
Exclusive to Netflix, this original movie features four siblings who hatch a plan to get rid of their selfish and unloving parents. Creepy in a child-friendly way of course, the upbeat movie is packed with comedy and caper, as well as some well-known voiceovers, including Ricky Gervais and Maya Rudolph.
Available on Netflix.
Yes Day (PG)
‘Yes Day’ is to this generation, what ‘Freaky Friday’ was to ours. It centres around a family who decide to have a ‘yes day’ and agree to all their children’s requests for 24-hours, with a few caveats thrown in for good measure. With Jennifer Garner as the Mum, you’ll relate to it in oh-so many ways.
However, on second thought we’re not sure whether we want our kids to even think that ‘Yes Day’ could be a possibility.
Available on Netflix.
Wonder Park (PG)
This one will have definitely pull on the heart strings without us giving too much a way.
June a young girl with a wild imagination sets off to save the fantasy wonderland that her and her mum created. But she can’t do it alone as she teams up with with her furry friends.
The self-finding and healing adventure shows June that anything is possible.
Available on Netflix.
Tom and Jerry (PG)
Ready for some old-fashioned comedy with a modern twist? Just as well that the world-famous cat and mouse, aka Tom and Jerry, are back in town! It’s hard to imagine that these characters were once enjoyed by our parents (and their parents) and are now our children.
Getting a reboot for 2021, the famous rivals take to New York City, dwelling in a top-class hotel – and one that doesn’t appreciate unwelcome ‘pets’. With a high-profile wedding due to take place, you can well imagine the mayhem that ensues.
Available in theatres now, you can also catch this action family movie on Amazon Prime.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 (U)
If you missed the Secret Life of Pets II in the cinema, or even if you didn’t, it’s time to make full use of your Netflix subscription and settle in for a night of fun.
Expect to laugh out loud, as it beautifully brings to life all the traits of our favourite pets, with some hidden adult jokes sandwiched in. There are some great characters too, including; highly-strung Norman the hamster, Daisy the Shi Tsui with attitude, and of course Captain Snowball – the fluffy wuffy rabbit voiced by comedy hero Kevin Hart. It’s by far one of the best family movies on Netflix, and one the kids will want to watch again and again and again…
Available on Netflix.
Abominable (G)
Another hit Netflix family movie is Abominable.
What do you do when you discover a Yeti on the top of your roof?
Go on adventure to get him home of course.
After discovering a yeti, three friends embark on a quest to reunite the creature with his family. However, this of course is made even harder by the fact they must keep him safe from a wealthy man and a zoologist who want to capture him.
