Black Widow cracked record numbers on its opening weekend.
Is straight to streaming the future for blockbuster movies?
Disney+ has released figures after its Black Widow launch revealing a whopping $60 million made in sales from Disney+ Premier Access from the opening weekend..
This makes Black Widow the largest domestic box office opening since the pandemic began and the highest domestic opening weekend for an MCU origin story after Black Panther and Captain Marvel. It comes as no surprise really, considering it’s the first Marvel film to hit the big screen in over two years.

What Is Premier Access?
If you haven’t heard of Premier Access, here’s a quick scoop.
Basically, it’s a section on Disney+ that gives you front-row seats to massive blockbusters on the same day they hit the theatres from the comfort of your own home for $34.99. They’ve released other hits previously such as Mulan, Raya and The Last Dragon and Cruella.
How Many People Tuned In – A Breakdown Of The Numbers
In a rare treat, we’ve been given all the figures and stats by Disney to break it all down.
Disney said that Black Widow made more than $215 million in sales over last weekend, which included $80 million from the domestic box office, $78 million in international sales and over $60 million in Disney+ Premiere Access spent globally.
Essentially that means over 2 million people purchased Black Widow online on the weekend alone.
Will We See More MCU Films Launch On Disney+?
It’s too early to tell at the moment, but given the success of this launch, it could be a strong possibility. We do know that Jungle Cruise is lined up for Premier Access on July 30th this year, but there isn’t even a mention of any others after that.
Even though it’s killing it on the sales side of things, it doesn’t come without its downfalls. Launching premiere movies online can mean that the film will potentially land on illegal streaming sites immediately, plus the fact that Disney+ is not available worldwide so reach is limited.
Marvel has not released any Premiere Access plans for their other titles in 2021, so really we’ll just have to wait and see.
