The Backstory
The book series it’s based off was published in 1965 and is perhaps the greatest sci-fi novel of all time, winning both the Hugo Award and Nebula Award for best novel.
The first book kicked off an entire series that included five more sequels. Its fanbase built through the ’60s and ’70s and has now sold millions of copies worldwide.
This new movie won’t be the first remake, it joins a long line of controversial attempts to adapt Dune into a movie. It was originally turned into a film in 1984 by David Lynch, however, didn’t go down well at all and was deemed the biggest failure in movie history (ouch). The pressures well and truly on this time.
What’s it about?
Dune is set far in the future during the time of intergalactic feuds between powerful noble houses in a fight for control.
On planet Caladan Duke Leto, House Of Atreides, prepares to leave for his new position as governor of Arrakis- a barren desert planet full of valuable resources including a drug called spice that enhances mental abilities and extends life.
The story goes on to follow a young Paul Atreides after his family arrives in Arrakis and is betrayed by the Emperor and their rival house, House Harkonnen. Paul is entrusted with the protection of the valuable assets that are vital elements to the galaxy.
The planet of Arrakis is inhibited by giant sandworms (expect insane graphics) and Fremen, natives of the desert who target Paul as a potential leader of their planet. It all unfolds into a thrilling tale of war and betrayal.
The movie will span over the first half of the novel, with Villeneuve making the decision to split it into two installments in order to tackle such a complex movie.
