For this week’s instalment of our “Friday Night Movies” series, we are taking you back to 1990 with a classic directed by the eccentric and brilliant Tim Burton — Edward Scissorhands.
Plot
The film tells the extraordinary tale of Edward, an artificial man with scissors for hands, created by an unconventional inventor (played by Vincent Price in one of his final roles). After the death of his creator, Edward lives a solitary life in a creepy, dilapidated mansion, devoid of any human contact.
The catalyst for the story however is when an Avon saleswoman, Peg Boggs, stumbles upon Edward’s mansion. She welcomes him into her home in the colourful, cookie-cutter suburbia of the 1950s. Despite his intimidating appearance, his gentle soul shines through, endearing him to the Bogg’s family and most of the community. As Edward’s scissor-enhanced hands begin to transform the mundane into the extraordinary, we are taken on a poignant and often humorous exploration of acceptance, belonging, and the human condition.
“People are scared of things that are different,” is a line from the movie that will reverberate through the hearts of those who’ve ever felt the sting of being ‘othered’. Tim Burton blends dark and quirky aesthetics with an endearing message about embracing what is “other” within a society that often rewards conformity.
Cast
Let’s pause for a moment and admire the stellar cast of this film. Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Edward has incredible emotional depth and subtlety. He conveys more with his scissored talons and piercing stare than many actors could with a full range of expressions and dialogue. Winona Ryder exudes charm and curiosity, capturing the heart of both Edward and the audience. And Dianne Wiest shines as the nurturing, kind-hearted Peg Boggs.
Reviews
Not only do we love this 90s classic, Edward Scissorhands also wowed the critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a Certified Fresh rating of 89%, IMDb users have also showered it with love, giving it a solid 7.9/10 rating.
Critics and audiences have praised Tim Burton’s unique visual style, Danny Elfman’s hauntingly beautiful musical score, and the film’s timeless message of embracing the “other” in a society that shuns differences.
