Week one of Fringe World Festival Perth is done and I’m overwhelmed. Here’s a quick review of what I saw.

Opening Night. On a hot night artists, sponsors, influencers and politicians descended on the Pleasure Garden in Northbridge. It’s not often you get such an eclectic mix of people together and sometimes it was a bit tricky telling who’s who. After a few speeches and an emotional smoking ceremony it was into party mode, Fringe style.
Virgin In A Knife Fight. I’ve already given this show a rave review and I’m thrilled that it featured first week Fringe Awards. It’s a must-see storytelling masterclass. If you miss it in Perth look out for it when it comes to your city. For my review go to Review. For tickets click here.

Fountain Lakes Y2K. I missed this show in last year’s Fringe so was thrilled to catch it this time round. As the name suggests the show is set in 1999 with Y2K looming. The girls are single and looking for lurrrrve. All your favourite references are there along with a host of reminders about what we lived through and an eyeopener for those who didn’t. The show is a hoot as you would expect from these brilliant performers. It also appeared in the week one Fringe Awards. For tickets click here.

Club D’Amour : Encore. Last year I saw the famous Bernie D here on a 40 degree night! It was a tour de force for artists and audience alike. Thankfully this year it was perfect weather. These artists have had some time away from Perth Fringe so it was wonderful to get to experience them again. I say experience because that’s what it is, a blast for the senses. The show includes circus, drag and burlesque all performed with a backing of stunning live vocals. This also make it into week one Fringe Awards. For tickets click here.

Ice Cream Factory Opening Night. Held in the large outdoor space we were treated to Fringe shows from London Calling and MARVELous.
London Calling is a mix of illusionists, circus tricks, aerial work and standup comedy. It’s a slick production performed by seasoned artists. I loved the shadow work, where the artist used his hands to project all manner of critters onto the screen. I’d seen this act on television but to see it performed live was mesmerizing. Well worth the ticket price for this alone. For tickets click here.

MARVELous: A Risque Parody. This show delivers exactly what it says on the box. I’m not sure how they get away with it, but they put the likes of Spiderman, Captain American, Thor and others through some very sticky situations. Fans of the Marvel superheroes will love this. There were a few sound issues on our night which I’m sure they’ll get fixed. For tickets click here.

Raul Kohl: The Kohli Bible. All these big shows are great but sometimes a one-man show does the trick. I knew nothing about Raul before rocking up to his show at The Last Laugh at the Shoe Bar. It was a relief to find out he’s an internationally awarded observational comedian a seasoned performer well versed in audition interaction. From the outset you could tell he knew what he was doing, which made us all relax. His knowledge of historical events made me think about seeing his other show, The History Comedy Show, For tickets click here.
