Netflix users all over Australia will be yelling out their windows, “Not happy Jan!” with the bad news that Netflix has officially bumped up subscription costs (again) across Australia. Whether you’re on the ad-supported tier or paying for Ultra HD, you’ll be handing over more each month. And it’s the second time in just over a year.
New Netflix Australia Prices
- Standard with ads: $7.99 → $9.99 (+$2)
- Standard (no ads): $18.99 → $20.99 (+$2)
- Premium (4K/Ultra HD): $25.99 → $28.99 (+$3)
- Extra member fees (password sharing): + $1 per month
If you’re on Premium, that’s almost $350/year — a 26% jump compared to mid-2024.
Why the Price Hike?
Netflix says it’s about funding “new stories and better experiences.” Translation: more content, better tech, and a tighter grip on password sharing. The crackdown means only household members can watch without paying extra.
It’s also part of a bigger streaming trend — in the past two years, Disney+, Binge, and Stan have all bumped their prices, while ad-supported tiers are becoming the new “budget” entry point.
How Netflix Stacks Up Now
Netflix remains the priciest for top-tier streaming — but also has the deepest content library.
| Service | Monthly Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix Premium | $28.99 | 4K, HDR, 4 streams |
| Disney+ | $13.99 | No ads |
| Binge Standard | $18.00 | HD, 2 streams |
| Stan Premium | $21.00 | 4K, 4 streams |
| Prime Video | $9.99 | Includes Amazon perks |
A Decade of Price Hikes

When Netflix launched in Australia in 2015 (happy 10th birthday), a Standard plan cost $11.99/month. Today? $20.99. That’s almost double in 10 years — outpacing inflation and many household bills.
What You Can Do To Save?
- Switch tiers — If you can live with ads, the ad-supported plan saves you a few extra dollars each month.
- Alternate subscriptions — Rotate between Netflix and another service every few months by picking and choosing which new hit shows you have to watch.
- Share (legally) — Add an extra member slot rather than separate full accounts.
- Bundle — Some telcos offer discounted streaming packages.
