What’s going to happen in Virgin River Season 3? Here is everything we know so far.
For fans of the romantic drama series Virgin River, the wait is almost over! Ten episodes of season three are set to release next month on July 9, 2021.
The Rewind
For those just discovering the series, Virgin River is based on the New York Times bestselling book series by author Robyn Carr.
The TV series adaptation is about a nurse practitioner Melinda “Mel” Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) who decides to move from Los Angeles to a remote town in North California. She wants a fresh start and to escape her demons in a “simple” country town. Of course, as with many moving-to-a-small-town plots, the stereotype is not true and she faces non-stop drama (and romance) as she struggles to deal with her past.
Season one of the drama began in 2019, with principal filming in and around Vancouver, British Columbia. Canada is a familiar second home to west coast productions, with pre-pandemic shooting of Deadpool 2, Bates Motel, Watchman, The Good Doctor and Riverdale to name a few. The setting for Virgin River is actually the real life town of Snug Cove on Bowen Island, with the gorgeous old growth forests a perfect “stand in” for Northern California.
What to Expect
Solid writing and a great ensemble cast made Virgin River a critical hit, with a 72% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Spoiler Alert … skip this paragraph if you haven’t finished season two.
Season three picks up after multiple cliffhangers at the end of season two: A jilted Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) threatening to take the twins away from Jack (Martin Henderson) after he rejects her for Mel, the witness against drug boss Calvin (David Cubitt) spotted alive and well in a secret video, Hope and Doc’s (Annette O’Toole and Tim Matheson) poignant celebration with its heartbreaking twist, and the shocking last scene where Mel finds Jack on the floor of the bar bleeding from a gunshot wound.
Who says life is boring in a small town?
Sue Tenny, showrunner for the series, had this to say in an interview with TVLine: “Doc has some stuff going on [next] season,” referring to his new situation as “a complication that will challenge him and will challenge his relationship with Hope. He’s going to rise to the challenge, but it is a real complication for him, especially for him practising medicine going forward. Will he be able to continue to do that? The clinic and town are his life, so we will seriously explore that.”
Tinney also hinted at a time jump after season two, so don’t expect things to just pick up right where they left off.
It’s also confirmed that at least 5 new characters are being added to the show this coming season, headed by Zibby Allen (Grey’s Anatomy) as Jack’s lawyer sister Brie, and Saving Grace’s Stacey Farber as Lilly’s daughter.
