Potter fans are getting restless with rumours sparking of a new era in the popular wizarding world franchise.
Apparently, Warner Bros is closing in on a deal with J.K. Rowling over new filmed entertainment. Sources in London say that a deal was done at least six months ago, and that writers are already working on a Harry Potter TV series that is most likely destined for Warner Bros streaming service HBO.
Meanwhile over in Hollywood rumours are also abuzz that Rowling is eyeing up the possibility of another Potter film franchise.
“The Potter spin-off is being talked about as a fact by people who work for HBO,” according to one insider.
The news comes as the Fantastic Beasts series seems to have lost some of its magic on the third installment, perhaps due to the fact Johnny Depp was removed from his role of Grindelwald or the fact that it didn’t live up to the previous two.
Though the talk surrounding all of this is pretty loud, suits at Warner Bros deny both stories and are reluctant to confirm any sort of meeting between Rowling and boss David Zaslav, so take what you will from this information.
Rowling controls the Potter IP, meaning every decision has to come through her from merchandise down to video games or theme parks.
It would certainly be no surprise if said rumours were true and Warner Bros did jump on the opportunity to create a spin-off TV series, although fans of the original movies may not be too pleased if it should fail in any way. The Potter franchise is undoubtedly iconic for many generations, and it would seem likely they’d want to squeeze every last drop out of it.
So – will Harry Potter follow suit with the likes of Disney who have churned out a few uber-successful TV spin-off series from its Star Wars and Marvel film franchise?
