Myth & Mogul: John DeLorean – under the hood of his self-created legend lies darkness and deceit.
Switching gears on July 30th, Netflix will take us for a spin with a new series unveiling the controversy behind one of the world’s most recognisable cars, the DeLorean – AKA the ‘Back to the Future’ car, and of course, its infamous creator in the latest Netflix documentary Myth & Mogul – John DeLorean.
The Future Is Back
This won’t be the first time that John DeLorean’s fascinating story has been brought to life on the silver screen, but it will be the first time that we really see how much the man was equally a genius as he was an unfortunate criminal. Split into three episodes, the documentary will be a mash-up of exclusive footage shot by Oscar-nominated filmmaker, D.A. Pennebaker (Bob Dylan: Don’t Look Back), and interviews featuring an array of personalities, which will no doubt include the corporate tycoon himself.
At one point, an interviewee claims that DeLorean himself said, “I made millions and I lost millions and half the fun is getting it back”, which pretty much summarises the kind of shenanigans that will unfold throughout the series.
Not Just Decked-Out For Diehard Fans
If DeLorean has anyone to thank, it should be Robert Zemeckis. Not only did Zemeckis turn one of DeLorean’s sleek inventions into a universal icon with his blockbuster franchise, but the movies are responsible for painting the man’s legacy in a positive light to this very day.
Funnily enough, the dream model used in the films with Michael J. Fox behind the wheel actually moved at a sloth’s pace – especially for sports car standards (no more than 85kms, in fact). It was far from the lightning-speed, time-warping machine that fans wished it would be in reality and it’s precisely those kinds of reveals we plan to see in the doco.
The narrative focus won’t just be on the corrupt intricacies of the automotive industry, but also the more foolish and humane elements from DeLorean’s personal life to balance it all out.
Pit Stop
Even if you’re not a fan of flash cars or science fiction, it’s impossible to deny that we can all get some guilty pleasure out of seeing a classic rise-and-fall story every once in a while – or, in this case – a classic crash-and-burn story.
From corporate greed and money laundering to the unexpected celebrity involvement, the entertainment factor here is high and we’re living for it. So strap yourselves in, because this one should be well worth the ride.
