An all-star cast, plenty of action, laughs and thrills: What is Red Notice?
It’s Netflix’s biggest movie that you’ve never heard of. So you can be forgiven for asking ‘Red who?’ when we say that the Red Notice movie is finally launching.
Ok, so let’s get you up to speed.
Get a glimpse in this Netflix Teaser (1.56):
Not to be confused with SAS Red Notice (a whole other movie entirely), the Netflix original is billed as an ‘action-crime-comedy thriller’ – basically, a movie with something for everyone.
Impressively, it has a trio of stars lined up, and we’re here for it. This includes the incredible Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. I know what you’re thinking, three huge names and I’ve never heard about this?! We were surprised as well.
We’re wondering if it’s any coincidence that they all have superhero movies in common: Gal as the irrepressible Wonder Woman, Ryan Reynolds as the iconic Wade Winston Wilson – aka Deadpool, and The Rock is about to make his superhero debut in Black Adam. But enough speculation from us, this is what we know…
What’s the plot?
The producers aren’t giving too much away in terms of the plot, but the movie is about the world’s most menacing art thief and the greatest conman that ever lived. In order to track down the thief, INTERPOL put out a Red Notice (see what they did there) calling upon agents across the world to step in.
The three main roles include an FBI profiler, which we expect Johnson to play, along with an art thief and conman – likely split between Gadot and Reynolds. Basically, we’re expecting Gambit vibes with a Hollywood make-over.
In true Netflix style, there’s no Red Notice Netflix trailer per se, however they have teased us with a preview above of what’s in store on the streaming channel for the year ahead. The Red Notice cast can be seen in the opening frame, with a few choice snippets from the movie showcased at 1:56 with some blink-and-you’ll-miss-it frames.
From this we can expect big explosions and action-packed James Bond-esque scenes. The Rock is in leather jacket uniform – obviously – and typical off-the-wall humour from Ryan Reynolds. Femme fatale Gal Gadot never fails to impress with her kick-ass skills either.
A sneak peak of Red Notice on Rotten Tomatoes tells us that the upcoming movie original is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber – best known for DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story, We’re the Millers and Skyscraper. Bringing a combination of comedy undertones and jaw-dropping scenes, it gives you a taste of what’s to come.
Red Notice release date?
Originally, and perhaps the main reason why there hasn’t been too much hype about it, is because the movie was put on hold last year due to the global pandemic. Good news however, filming was able to resume in September, and finally wrapped in Italy in November 2020 – the original time it was due to launch.
Red Notice movie has since been rescheduled for release, and while we don’t have a confirmed date, it’s likely to premiere this summer on Netflix. But, all is forgiven, since the movie hasn’t had the easiest of starts, least of all with Universal hesitating on committing to the project before it was taken into custody by Netflix.

The star has already given us a sneak peek of the Red Notice movie, with an image of him looking like a bodyguard you really don’t want to mess with standing in front of a Fabergé-style egg. That’s if you’re not too distracted by the statue wavering in the background.. we’ll leave that right there.
Johnson explains in the post: “I give you one of the rare and true priceless artifacts to ever exist – Cleopatra’s Egg. Are you sure you want to steal it on my watch? The FBI Profiler. The World’s Most Wanted Art Thief. And the greatest conman the world has never seen. Excited for you to see this movie in 2021 — only on @netflix.”
