The MCU takes the path not taken this August on Disney+
Marvel fanatics get ready to get a little weird this August as Disney+ takes your favourite MCU characters and moments and asks: What If…?
What If? What is it? (Why is Gamora?…)
What If…? Is a new animated series from those magic makers at Marvel Studios. Don’t take this as being a simple morning cartoon fair, though!
This show will have every bit of the production, cast, action and high quality you expect from the Marvel team and will be firmly set in the MCU multiverse. Which as we’ve seen with WandaVision, Loki, Doctor Strange 2 and all the Spider-Man rumours are very much in play in the current phase.
What’s it all about?
A mainstay of Marvel Comics since 1977, What If…? centres around Uatu the Watcher. The Watchers are an all-powerful and omnipresent race tasked with observing and documenting the universe. They are sworn never to interfere, only watch (Although that doesn’t always go to plan!). Uatu will be our host, narrator and guide as he takes an eye over the multiverse as things go a little sliding doors on us.
What If.. ? Will take key moments from the 20+ Marvel movies and as the title goes, ask What if? Let’s follow this one change in time and see the butterfly effect that follows. It’s a little Marvel, a little Sliding Doors and a little Twilight Zone.
Who’s in it?
The cast for this show is stacked to say the least. What Marvel mainstays are voicing their iconic characters? *deep breath* How about Hayley Atwell, Chadwick Boseman, Josh Brolin, Jess Goldblum, Karen Gillan, Michael Douglas, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L Jackson, Michael B Jordan, Natalie Portman, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Mark Ruffalo and plenty more! That’s just the confirmed names too. There’s also talk Robert Downey Jr. will lend his snark once again for Tony. Huge.
Plus our guide, Uatu the Watcher will be voiced by Jeffrey Wright who pretty much has one of my most favourite voices ever.
Watch: What If…? Trailer
What Episodes Should We Expect?
Until the recent trailer release, Marvel had been a little hush-hush on this one offering only one short trailer showcasing the pilot episode and few glimpses beyond that.
Luckily the internet is vast and leaks can happen! Based on clips, merchandise and rumours we can expect the following scenarios.
What if Peggy Carter took the super-soldier serum? Cap’s best gal suits up as Captain Britain and wields the shield. Serum or not, you can’t keep Steve Rogers out of the fight as he appears to suiting up in an Iron Man-esque suit care of Tony Stark’s old man, Howard Stark.
What if T-Challa became Star-Lord? In Chadwick Boseman’s final role we see how thing would have played out if the Ravagers had taken T-Challa abducted T-Challa into space instead of Peter Quill.
What if Tony Stark went to Sakaar? Not much is known about this one but based on a leaked Lego set it looks like Tony ends up on Sakaar instead of The Hulk. With a cobbled together (In a cave with a bunch of scraps no doubt) Iron Man suit he takes part in the Grandmasters Gladiator games.
Marvel Zombies? The trailer shows a zombie Captain America coming after Bucky. Not much else is known but, honestly, I was down at “Zombie Captain America”.
Party Thor? This is an odd one. Although the name definitely has me down already. From leaked merch is looks like a world where Thor doesn’t learn humility and uses Earth as his own personal party planet. I’m sure chaos and hilarity will ensue.
What else? There’s plenty more in the works with episodes based around Iron Man 1, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel and Infinity War among others and a second season already confirmed. We might be seeing Loki wielding Mjolnir, Peter Parker as Hawkeye (?!) and all sorts of wackiness.
What If…? Release Date
It’s not too far away! What If…? release date has been set to start streaming August 11 with new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+
We seem to be destined to have a Marvel thing to watch every Wednesday until the end of time… and we are alright with that.
