It’s back to high school for Alicia Silverstone in this new Netflix comedy.
Everyone’s high-school crush is back, and wait for it – she’s doing what she does best. More than 25 years since she launched into our lives (and never left) Alicia Silverstone, star of Clueless, is returning to high-school comedy. Only this time, she’s a little older.
The buzz around the Senior Year movie has started to up the ante, giving us the perfect excuse to look back at the cult of Clueless, as well as look forward to the Senior Year film 2021.
Senior Year – What We Know So Far
Keeping up with the all the good comedies on Netflix, Senior Year brings us an entertaining plot, calling all Clueless fans to attention. Set in 1997, we see the story of a popular high-school cheerleader who has it all – the guys, the girls, the teachers…. that is until she slips into a coma for twenty years. In Senior Year, we see her return just as she left off, and the rest you can guess.
We’re not quite sure if it’s got the giddiness of Austin Powers about it, but there’s bound to be comparisons, baby!
As for the cast, well, we’re in for a treat.
The Senior Year Cast
Let’s start with the Senior Year Rebel Wilson rumours. We can confirm that Rebel is taking the lead role in the upcoming movie, playing Ruby the cheerleader no less. The 41-year old actress who has been enjoying a health-kick over the past year will be taking the role of thirty-seven year old Ruby, returning to college life after two decades in a coma.
As she picks up where she left off, Wilson’s character attempts to reclaim the prom-queen crown – the most coveted prize in US college popularity status. As well as featuring in the flick, Wilson is producing it alongside Todd Garner and Chris Bender, with Alex Hardcastle directing. We’re expecting full belly-ache laughs from scriptwriter Brandon Scott Jones, which is based on a spec from Andrew Knauer and Arthur Pielli.
But perhaps of all the Senior Year cast, we are most excited to see Alicia Silverstone back on the big screen. The actress, who found international fame after her career-defining role as Cher Horowitz in Clueless, has shied away from the silver-screen in recent years, opting for TV roles instead. These more recently include Eat S**t Kenny Daniels and American Woman, as well as Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club and as Queen Marlena in the upcoming animation He-Man revival ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’.
Netflix are still to confirm who she will play, but if Silverstone’s recent foray into TikTok is anything to go by, we’re in for a treat full of throwback vibes. After all, she will always be best-remembered and loved as ‘Cher’ next door – an entitled yet irresistibly likeable Beverley Hills High School student. This casting is the perfect fit for her quick wit, one-liners and acting prowess, especially with hilariously funny Wilson in tow.
Others confirmed in the Senior Year cast include Sam Richardson, Justin Hartley, Chris Parnell and Mary Holland, to name but a few.
When Will Senior Year Hit Screens?
Good question, and unfortunately, not one we have the answer to. As yet, there is no trailer or behind-the-scenes footage to forensically examine- but we’re hoping to see it very soon.
While we hoped the movie would be released this year, production was just in development in February, suggesting that it’s most likely arriving on Netflix sometime in 2022. Until then, you’ll just have to entertain yourself with the many other top comedies on Netflix like ‘Catfight’ or thriller ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’, which both feature Alicia Silverstone.
Or if you haven’t seen The Baby-Sitters Club, now on Netflix, it’s the perfect prelude to Senior Years, touching on some topical parenting-children dilemmas.
